Just had my left knee scoped today – technically it was a knee arthroscopy with meniscectomy. Pretty minor stuff compared to other medical procedures (i.e. baby receiving heart transplant). It’s interesting to learn how to function – albeit temporarily – on one good knee. I’ve always appreciated all the minor surgeries I’ve had as a way to keep me humble. Minor physical impairments remind me of how challenging it is for those with far greater, and permanent, impairments. And I want to make sure you understand that this does not lead me to pity them. It gives me a profound respect for their spirit, effort, and attitude. But definitely not pity. So while I definitely am not looking for a humbling mechanism of periodic surgical procedures, I’m thankful to be reminded of the frailty of this temporary shell called my body and have a way to keep those physically challenged in my heart.
The assassination of Benazir Bhutto was certainly a sad event in the news today. Regardless of one’s political persuasion, one would certainly hate to see anyone’s life ended in this way. And to all you conspiracy theorists out there: just STOP! Pakistan is rife with political/cultural/religious factions bent on destroying each other and further enforcing sharia law. I don’t think they need help from any foreign government to remove what the militants would see as their obstacles.
This event also should serve as a reminder that no matter how fractured and malfunctioning our political system and election process is, it is still a much healthier system than you will find across the world.
